What we finance

Full vans, pop-tops, hybrid campers, camper trailers, motorhomes, fifth wheelers, and slide-on campers. Private sales included.

The towing question, before you sign anything

This is the one that catches people, and it's worth a minute because nobody else writes it.

Your car has a maximum tow capacity, and the van has an ATM (aggregate trailer mass). Those two numbers need to work together — with the van loaded, not empty. Plenty of people finance a van that their current car legally can't tow once there's water in the tanks and gear in the cupboards, and then discover it after settlement.

Check the tow rating on your vehicle's compliance plate against the van's ATM, not its tare weight, before you commit. If the numbers don't work you've got two purchases to finance, not one — and that's a conversation worth having with us upfront rather than after.

Buying privately

Most good second-hand vans sell privately. We pay the seller direct, check for money owing, and handle the transfer. Worth getting an independent inspection on anything older — damp in the walls is the expensive problem and it doesn't announce itself.

Full-timers and long trips

If you're planning to live in it rather than holiday in it, say so when you apply. Some lenders treat a van that's your primary residence differently to one that sits in the driveway eleven months of the year. Better to have that sorted at application than at settlement.

Show floor, dealer yard or driveway: how each purchase runs

At a caravan show

Shows are where deposits get taken on the day, and the show finance desk knows it. Walk in with approval already sorted and the show discount is yours without signing whatever the desk offers. Ring us the week before the show, not the Monday after.

From a dealer yard

A van in stock can settle within days of approval. A van you're ordering is a different timeline — see the next section, because the finance works differently.

Privately

Where the second-hand value is. The checks and direct seller payment work as described above, and one timing note: the private market fills up after summer holidays, when vans that did one big trip go up for sale. Patience in autumn buys well.

Financing a van that isn't built yet

Order a new van and there's usually a wait while it's built — often months. The finance doesn't settle when you order; it settles at handover, when the van exists and the final invoice is issued. Your deposit to the manufacturer is the only money that moves early.

Approvals don't last forever, so we time yours against the promised build window and refresh it if the build runs long — which builds do. That's a normal part of how we run these deals, not a problem.

One thing to read before you sign the order: the contract's terms on price changes between order and delivery. If the price can move, you want to know by how much before it's locked in, because the finance amount follows the final invoice. Tell us the handover window the dealer promises and we'll work to it.

Be careful with builders who ask for progress payments through the build. Money paid before you take delivery is exposed if the builder gets into trouble — and van builders do, from time to time. Finance settling at handover keeps the bulk of the money out of harm's way until the van is real, registered and yours. If a contract asks for big money early, ring us before you sign it.

New or used: the caravan version

New means your layout, your spec, full warranty — and the wait. If the big trip is booked for June, count backwards and be honest about whether a build makes the date.

Used means on the road next weekend, and the first owner has worn the early depreciation. Vans hold their value better than cars, so the used market is genuinely competitive — good vans sell fast, which is another argument for having approval ready before you start looking.

Between the two sit ex-display and show vans: current models that spent a season being walked through. They carry a genuine discount for a van that's never been towed further than the showground, though check for wear where thousands of visitors have opened every cupboard. They finance as near-new.

Van age matters to lenders the way car age does: older vans narrow the field of who'll write the deal and can shorten the available term. If you're looking at something with a few decades on it, send us the details before you fall in love.

Owning it: the costs past the repayment

Rego and insurance

The van is registered and insured separately from the car towing it. On a secured loan, lenders generally require comprehensive insurance on the van from settlement.

Storage

If it won't fit beside the house, a storage yard is a permanent line in the budget. Some councils also limit long-term street parking of vans — worth checking yours before the van arrives, not after.

Servicing

Wheel bearings and brakes annually, even on a van that barely moved. Especially on a van that barely moved — sitting still is its own kind of wear.

Tyres

Caravan tyres usually age out before they wear out. Check the date stamp on the sidewall, not the tread, and budget replacements on age.

Trip costs

Towing adds meaningfully to fuel consumption — expect the tow vehicle to drink a lot harder with the van on — and site fees are the caravan's version of accommodation. The van saves money against motels over years, not weekends. Budget the shakedown trip close to home first; it finds the problems cheaply.

Batteries and gas

House batteries have a lifespan and a replacement cost. Gas work needs a licensed gasfitter — it's not a DIY line item.

Caravan finance mistakes

A show deposit before the finance conversation

Paying to hold a van before you've priced the money on it hands the whip hand to the desk. Approval first costs nothing and usually takes a day or two.

Forgetting the towing setup

Weight distribution hitch, towing mirrors, brake controller — electric brakes are a legal requirement above certain trailer weights. It's real money and it belongs in the plan, not the credit card, and bought with the van it can often go in the deal.

Accessories eating the payload

Toolboxes, a second water tank, the annexe, two e-bikes on a rack: everything you bolt on comes off what you can legally load inside. Weigh the plan, not just the van.

A term past your plans

Upgrading to the bigger van in three years? Don't sign the longest term on this one just for the smaller repayment — you'll be trading with more owing than you'd like.

Refinancing the van

If the van was financed at a dealer desk a couple of years back, or your credit file has improved since, it's worth re-pricing. We compare 60+ lenders and will beat your current offer.

The other common trigger is a balloon falling due right when the big lap is planned. Refinancing the residual over a fresh term keeps the van and the trip — usually a better outcome than selling the van to clear it. A payout figure and a recent statement is all it takes to look, and conditional approval typically runs 24 to 48 hours.

And because vans hold their value better than cars, the numbers on a caravan refinance often stack up more cleanly — the van underneath the loan is usually still worth real money. We run the exit costs against the saving before you commit, and if it doesn't leave you in front we'll say so.
